AFFPIN Volunteer Program
Four volunteer opportunities are offered by AFFPIN for all who wish to travel to Uganda. The programs attempt to provide equal benefit to the host organisation [AFFPIN], the local community, and the visiting volunteers. [1] Individual volunteers: Aimed at anyone aged 17 years and above who wishes to travel and volunteer by themselves with AFFPIN. This includes working with the AFFPIN organisation or helping at Manjeri Children's Home & School or a combination of both. A volunteer may choose the period of time they wish to stay. [2] Group volunteering: Designed for a group of people from the same or from different countries but able to travel to Uganda and work with AFFPIN as a team. This program is normally run once a year between January and February for a three to four week volunteer placement. The group may range in size from five to a maximum of twenty five people. This program is mainly aimed at work parties. Previous groups have had aims such as construction of dormitories, water tanks, bunk beds etc. [3] Family Volunteering: This option is aimed at families with children who have an interest in volunteering. This gives families an opportunity to explore Africa whilst volunteering with an NGO. It can provide the children of volunteer families the opportunity to make new friends and experience Ugandan culture safely at a young age. (4) School Group Option: AFFPIN would like to welcome any school groups consisting of senior secondary students and teachers. This option can be tailored for the specific school upon consultation with AFFPIN. Maximum number of students for this option is twenty five. Volunteers who travel to Lugazi receive certificates of appreciation at the end of their volunteer placements. The Volunteering Experience:
The diet of a volunteer will generally consist of the local cuisine. Common foods include: bananas, potatoes, cassava, rice, posho [Maize flour], beans, peas, yams a variety of fruits, beef, fish, pock, milk, chicken etc…. Past volunteers have shown a liking to the local dishes, however, if required, a cook can be arranged to provide western food for a slightly higher fee. For individual volunteers we encourage them to live with a local family for a small weekly contribution or live by themselves at private accommodation in Lugazi. Upon completion of the current construction of the volunteer cottage at Manjeri in August 2007, there will be the option for volunteers to stay at Manjeri with the children. Below is the January 2007 international volunteer team from Australia, UK and Canada together with Irene (local AFFPIN worker) and the local group cook.
Volunteers who have travelled to Lugazi in the past have enjoyed a friendly working relationship with our local teams. Many have been surprised by their experiences in our villages and shared their love with the children at Manjeri Children's Home & School.
